Whimsy

If you want kids to check out books and read, you have to get them to the library first. Create more than a safe space. Create wonder, comfort, coolness, fun...a space where they're not only safe, but they're part of something magical. The items below help curate an atmosphere where students want to be.

Lighting in the Library

Enchant your space with calming, magical accents that invite relaxation and enchantment. During my first year as a librarian, I put up lights at the holidays. They were so magical, I couldn’t take them down. Now, we have twinkle lights on in the library every day, and we try to buy another twinkle light tree every year.

Student Freebies

These are small, affordable treasures that keep students coming back for more. They drift in often to see what new bookmarks and stickers have appeared, and each visit gives me a chance to get to know them a little better. Before long, we’re not just chatting about stickers—we’re talking about stories and books, too.
