Best known for her groundbreaking trilogy, The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins has a unique ability to create intricate worlds filled with action, suspense, and social commentary. High school students resonate with her compelling characters, particularly Katniss Everdeen, who embodies resilience and courage at its finest.

If your teen hasn’t read her work yet, now's the perfect time! This series can hook new readers. Students anxiously awaited the newest in the series last spring, Sunrise on the Reaping and we can't keep it in the library, even with several copies.

2. Neal Shusterman

Scythe

Unwind Dystology Set

The Skinjacker Trilogy

Neal Shusterman has established himself as a master storyteller with chilling plots that make readers ponder life’s big questions. His series, Scythe, delves into themes of mortality, ethics, and human nature, making it an excellent pick for deep discussions in classrooms or book clubs. Shusterman’s books are gripping and ideal for teens searching for a thought-provoking read.

This author quickly became one of my YA favorites. I find myself wondering how he could dream up these incredible worlds and experiences when I read his work. My first read for him was the Scythe series. I read it because my regulars kept coming in for it. As one would turn it in, he/she brought their friend to check it out. That was last year. It still is always out, and one of my first recommendations for kids looking to get hooked on reading. I recently started the Unwind series after hearing about it from a student, and wow, I'm hooked again.

3. Jenny Han

For those looking for a touch of romance, Jenny Han's novels are an absolute delight! Her popular series To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before introduces readers to love stories that feel genuine and relatable. High school readers adore her unique approach to young love, family ties, and self-discovery. Han’s writing captures the essence of teenage life with humor and heart.

Everyone wants to have The Summer I Turned Pretty on hand. Again, we have several in the library, and it's always on hold for the next person. I love walking into the classroom of the student who put it on hold and seeing their face light up when it finally arrives! They love to show it off. I'm sure Netflix brought this book to life in the library. We'll take it!

4. Brandon Sanderson

Fantasy lovers will find a treasure trove in Brandon Sanderson’s works. Known for his intricate world-building and unforgettable magic systems, Sanderson’s books like The Mistborn Trilogy and The Stormlight Archive have become staples in many high school libraries. His books draw readers into epic adventures, making them perfect for teens who crave a thrilling escape.

There is a group of kids in my library that are avid readers and can't get enough of these. They let me know when I was missing something he'd written in our library, and they let me know when new ones are coming out to make sure we have them ready for check out as soon as possible.

5. Victoria Aveyard

The Red Queen series is the latest obsession for readers in my library, including the teachers. It's on my personal list. Some readers love the drama; others feel it can get intense or emotionally heavy. There’s war, violence, heartbreak, and big feelings—but that’s also why so many teens are obsessed with it.

6. Leigh Bardugo

Shadow and Bone Trilogy

Six of Crows Duology (Six of Crows & Crooked Kingdom)

King of Scars Duology

Leigh Bardugo is best known for creating a layered fantasy world filled with dangerous magic, political intrigue, heartbreak, and hope. It’s rich, immersive, and the kind of world you never want to leave. Some of my most critical students readers absolutely loved Six of Crows.

7. Rick Riordan

For fans of mythology and adventure, Rick Riordan reigns supreme. His Percy Jackson & The Olympians series has garnered a devoted following and introduces classic myths in a fresh, relatable way. High school readers appreciate his engaging narratives, humor, and diverse characters, making his books a popular choice in school libraries.

Always a favorite. Riordan's books remind kids of the books they wanted to read in middle school, but never did. These can be just the right read to hook a new high school reader.

8. Veronica Roth

Divergent Series

Carve the Mark Series

Veronica Roth burst into the YA world and reshaped it with one iconic word: Divergent. This book is one of our most often requested reads. Her books often explore identity, courage, fear, and what happens when systems try to control who people are allowed to be.

These eight authors are perfect allies for high school readers. Their diverse perspectives and gripping narratives provide not only entertainment but also provoke thoughtful discussions. So, grab a book and get ready to lose yourself in these fantastic stories!
